Reactions Follow After Controversial Incident in WNBA Game
The situation continues to unfold after a confrontation during a game where Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas pushed her fist against Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s throat. Notably, former WNBA player Lisa Leslie has shared her thoughts on the incident.
Leslie appeared on CBS Sports’ show “We Need To Talk,” highlighting that the inconsistency in officiating has become a significant topic, especially after remarks from Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts regarding officiating standards.
She acknowledged the difficulties referees face, calling it a tough and often thankless job. However, Leslie argued that the referee should have seen the altercation between Thomas and Clark during the game.
“In this particular situation, I think the official could have caught it,” she said. “While watching the game, I thought, ‘Wow, that seemed excessive.’
It’s a fair observation. If a spectator like Leslie could see the incident clearly, then one of the officials should have been able to notice it too.
Leslie expressed that while she wasn’t shocked by the eventual suspension of Thomas, it was “painful” for her that the officials missed the call at that crucial moment and didn’t opt to review the play.
“Overall, I think the league needs improvement, the officials need improvement, and yes, the players need to step up as well,” she added. “We used to play a way that emphasized protecting each other. I want to be physical and competitive, but I don’t want to injure anyone.”
Leslie suggested that if Thomas had approached the situation differently and offered an apology to Clark, the punishment might have been less severe. “I believe the league made the right call based on how things unfolded. Consistency is essential, and we need to ensure this applies to all players, regardless of their status,” she noted.
