Life Sentences for Canadian Gamer After Violent Home Invasion

A Canadian gamer, reportedly fixated on a woman he met online, crossed into the U.S. and executed a violent home invasion in California, masquerading as an Amazon delivery person. Now, he faces life behind bars.

Devin Wolfgang Vanderhoof, 26, from North Vancouver, British Columbia, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder earlier this year. This shocking incident occurred in November 2024 in Salinas.

Prosecutors revealed that Vanderhoof spent nearly a year obsessing over the woman, meticulously plotting his attack across the border.

Authorities reported that he disguised himself as a delivery driver to break into homes and assault individuals. Prior to his flight to California, Vanderhoof allegedly strategized for over a month, buying weapons like knives, handcuffs, and duct tape, while surveilling the woman’s residence and workplace.

He wasn’t alone during this trip. Vanderhoof was accompanied by Darius Avery White, and they were apprehended while on a plane headed back to Canada.

White pleaded guilty to related assault charges, testified against Vanderhoof, and was sentenced in April.

On the night of the incident, Vanderhoof presented himself as an Amazon driver when the woman’s boyfriend opened the door. The situation escalated quickly, with Vanderhoof forcing his way inside and stabbing the boyfriend.

As chaos ensued outside while the victims attempted to flee, Vanderhoof’s boyfriend managed to disarm him and ended up stabbing his attacker.

Yet, Vanderhoof’s aggression didn’t cease. He subsequently turned on the female victim, strangling her until she lost consciousness. Astoundingly, both victims survived the brutal encounter.

Later, Vanderhoof confessed that he had “actually intended to kill someone.” He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for attempted murder and an additional five years for assault and weapon usage during the crime.

In a statement, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto emphasized that this case serves as a stark reminder about the potential dangers of online interactions. She urged parents and community members to stay engaged and proactive in safeguarding themselves and their children.
