Chris DeMarco Returns to Chase Center as Liberty Coach

SAN FRANCISCO — This Sunday, it will almost feel like home for Liberty coach Chris DeMarco.

After spending 14 years with the Golden State Warriors, he climbed the ranks from a video analyst to an assistant coach under Steve Kerr.

Having been part of the Warriors’ dynasty, DeMarco has four NBA Finals rings, a testament to his experience. He formed close relationships with players like Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole, and Draymond Green.

While he’s always harbored ambitions to be a head coach, it’s been a gradual journey. DeMarco has also coached the Bahamas men’s national team since 2019, even leading them close to qualifying for the Olympics two years ago.

The Liberty’s coaching position was highly coveted during the WNBA offseason. With resources at their disposal, general manager Jonathan Kolb sought out candidates who had NBA experience.

Ultimately, DeMarco got the position, completely transforming the team’s style of play. Navigating this transition hasn’t been easy, but through the first seven weeks of the season, the Liberty ranks seventh in offense and fifth in defense.

He plans to drop by his old offices at the Chase Center, which has become familiar territory for him since it opened in 2019 (previously, the Warriors played at Oracle Arena).

“It might feel a bit strange being back,” DeMarco mentioned. “But absolutely, I know how it is. I’m looking forward to seeing many familiar faces, both colleagues and players. Just parking the car and catching up with everyone at the door will be enjoyable,” he added.

Liberty assistant coach Will Sheehey will also have a personal connection during the visit. He worked with the Warriors, starting as the assistant video coordinator in August 2021 and quickly moving up the ranks to player development roles.

Before joining the Liberty, Sheehey spent time with Denmark’s Bakken Bears as an assistant coach and director of player development.

Having attended several Golden State games last season, DeMarco is aware of how dynamic the atmosphere can be. “Even in the offseason, you can catch some action at Chase and enjoy great basketball,” he said. “Being a fan during that time has been really fun.”
