Harry Kane Shines at MetLife Stadium
Harry Kane truly seemed liberated at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night. He scored the second goal in England’s 2-0 victory over Panama, becoming the national team’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
Kane netted his 11th World Cup goal in the 67th minute, expertly heading a cross from Jude Bellingham.
The Bayern Munich forward surpassed the previous record held by Gary Lineker, having already scored 10 goals across the 1986 to 1990 tournaments.
Feeling proud, Kane shared with the BBC post-match, “We discussed before the tournament how the World Cup is the pinnacle for professional players, so having 11 goals is something I’m definitely proud of.”
His performance has been impressive so far, with two goals in the opening match against Croatia and another against Panama.
Interestingly, there were worries surrounding Kane’s ability to score, to the point where a Ghanaian witch doctor claimed he would cast a spell to prevent it.
Now, Kane sits just one goal shy of soccer legend Pele among the all-time World Cup scorers, alongside greats like Jurgen Klinsmann and Sándor Kocsis.
Jude Bellingham, who scored his first goal for England during the match, declared, “For me, he’s the greatest England player of all time.”
Across 116 appearances, Kane has tallied 82 international goals and clinched the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He’s still in the hunt for another Golden Boot this year, trailing behind Lionel Messi’s five goals and Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, each with four.
England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, remarked, “Harry is in fantastic physical and mental condition. He’s eager to push further in this World Cup, but there’s a sense of longing for more.”
