Bill Maher Critiques Trump During Mark Twain Award Acceptance
Comedian Bill Maher took the stage over the weekend to accept the Mark Twain Award for American Humor at the Kennedy Center, and it wasn’t long before he directed some sharp words at President Donald Trump. Maher was joined by impressionist Matt Friend, who humorously questioned why someone with low ratings, like Trump, would even receive such an honor.
In a light-hearted jab, Maher made a comment regarding the differences of opinion he shares with Trump, suggesting a moment of civility before the insults resumed. “Could you please give me a moment and give your speech? Then you can go back to insulting me?” he quipped.
Remarks from Fellow Celebrities
Whitney Cummings, while performing, pointed out the irony of celebrating Maher at an event where Trump is the board chairman. Despite being warned against political commentary, she expressed that she felt undeterred. Meanwhile, actor Woody Harrelson humorously noted the recent removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center facade, playfully addressing it as an “ironic” situation.
A court’s decision led to the Kennedy Center dropping Trump’s name, which had been a contentious issue. The center had faced challenges regarding this change, but ultimately, Trump’s association was deemed removable. This shift in perception was echoed by Harrelson’s remarks as he congratulated Maher.
John Mellencamp also added a political twist to the evening, performing his classic “Pink Houses” and referencing Trump’s controversial renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. “…or whatever we call it these days,” he commented, which drew laughter from the audience.
Maher Reflects on Awards and Controversies
Bill Maher and Trump have had a contentious history, especially regarding the award itself. Maher recounted that the White House had initially tried to block his receipt of the Mark Twain Award. He mentioned that he always felt that such adversity only added to the honor. Emphasizing his respect for the efforts against him, he said, “I love that he takes the game so seriously.” Despite the attempts to halt the ceremony, he forged ahead, expressing immense gratitude that the award was still presented to him.
Interestingly, Maher noted that throughout his career, he has been nominated for over 40 Emmy Awards but has yet to win one. His self-deprecating humor came through when he asked, “Is that what I said? That’s all I said.”
