Maine Senate Race Tightens as Poll Shows Platner Leading Collins

Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, is currently in a close contest with long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins, according to a recent poll. The survey from the New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena, released on Monday, indicates Platner has a 49% approval among likely voters, while Collins trails slightly at 47%. There’s a small portion of respondents—3%—who remain undecided, suggesting that the race is, for all practical purposes, neck-and-neck.

Collins, who is known for her moderate stance, has at times voted against former President Donald Trump and is seeking her sixth term in the Senate. This race is particularly crucial as it could influence whether Republicans maintain their slim majority in the Senate come November. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage, and flipping the Maine seat is vital for Democrats aiming to reclaim that leadership.

Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, has gained support from progressive figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. He won the Democratic primary decisively against two opponents earlier this month, despite facing numerous controversies. These controversies have raised questions about his candidacy, with some even labeling him “damaged goods.” However, a significant portion of his supporters—over 90%—reportedly say their choice hinges on his political positions rather than the controversies.

During the campaign, Platner has addressed his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from his military service. He has also been on the defensive regarding past inflammatory comments on social media, a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and allegations of inappropriate behavior in his personal life. Platner has denied the claims of any violence and has expressed his commitment to change.

A recent poll indicates that while many want Democrats to take back control of Congress—54% of respondents—there are mixed feelings about Platner himself. Some voters have expressed doubts about his character and experience, pointing out that he has never held public office before.

On Collins’ side, there are concerns too. Many voters believe she is too aligned with Trump, and further, discussions about her age have surfaced among some supporters, questioning her suitability for the role given her 73 years.

Collins is a seasoned politician, and past predictions of her electoral defeat have often been overturned; she notably won re-election six years ago against expectations. Although Platner currently shows signs of leading Collins in newer polls, the landscape remains unpredictable.

Platner’s campaign has taken to social media to highlight their momentum, suggesting that while Collins may have substantial backing from various interests, they have the grassroots support of Maine residents.
