Criticism of Conservative Maternity Fashion by The New York Times
The New York Times faced backlash for its critique of maternity outfits worn by conservative figures, particularly focusing on Usha Vance’s dress during “Storytime with the Second Lady,” which features her husband J.D. Vance.
TV host Sarah Gonzalez expressed her disbelief, saying, “There’s no bottom. It just keeps getting lower. They even paid someone to critique what White House staffers wore during their pregnancies.” She compared the situation to shaming pregnant women about their clothing choices.
An article titled “The Politics and Power of Pregnancy Images” scrutinized the maternity style of Usha Vance, Katie Miller, and Caroline Leavitt. The Times referred to Usha’s “stretchy coral dress,” emphasizing how it clearly highlights her pregnancy.
In her response, Usha emphasized, “Now that I understand the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, I can’t wait to see what the New York Times has to say about my elastic waistband pants and compression socks! Meanwhile, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or not) and some fun stories with your kids in ‘Storytime with the Second Lady.'”
Gonzalez commented, “It’s typical New York Times journalism; they ignore serious issues. Instead, they focus on Usha’s maternity wear or gossip about Taylor Swift’s wedding.” She noted the absurdity of two push alerts concerning Taylor Swift news.
