Gavin Newsom names ex-chief of staff Jim DeBoo to California flood board

Newsom’s Appointment Sparks Controversy Over Nepotism

As Governor Gavin Newsom approaches the end of his tenure in California, he has appointed a close political ally, Jim DeBoo, to a significant position within the Central Valley Flood Prevention Commission. This move has reignited discussions about nepotism during his administration.

DeBoo, a political strategist and former chief of staff, is set to receive nearly $60,000 for his role, which will involve monthly board meetings, pending confirmation from the state Senate.

Critics, particularly from the state’s Republican Party, view this as another instance of Newsom favoring friends over qualified candidates, especially as he’s the subject of a federal investigation and is eyeing a potential 2028 presidential run.

State Senator Tony Strickland expressed concern, stating, “Even with just months left in office, Governor Newsom is still aiming to secure positions for his associates in jobs that require expertise.” He labeled the appointment a clear act of nepotism.

Both the governor’s office and DeBoo have not commented on the backlash.

DeBoo joined Newsom’s team in 2020, becoming a key figure as the state dealt with COVID-19 and rising recall efforts. His firm has reportedly raised over $2.4 million in campaign funds since then, contributing to various state initiatives.

After exiting government, DeBoo transitioned into a prominent consulting role within Sacramento, promoting his influence in shaping policies for Newsom’s administration.

In a related appointment, Newsom named Jared Blumenfeld, a former head of California’s Environmental Protection Agency, to the State Water Resources Control Board, where he will earn $186,721. Blumenfeld has a longer history with Newsom, having worked with him during his San Francisco mayoral tenure.

Critics maintain that these appointments exemplify a pattern of rewarding loyal supporters. Recent reports pointed out that many were granted to wealthy individuals contributing to Newsom’s political initiatives.

For instance, Mark Arabo was appointed to the state Racetrack Leasing Commission shortly after donating $25,000, while Andrew Tavacoli received a position on the board of Exposition Park after a substantial contribution. Greg Sallis, another donor, has contributed $2.3 million since 2022, leading to his appointment to the University of California Board of Trustees.

California Republican Party Chairman Colin Rankin condemned these actions, asserting, “This system prioritizes insider interests over the well-being of Californians. We need a new governor who will focus on our communities rather than political favors.”
