Trump's latest memo guarantees your right to repair your own vehicle

President Trump Targets Car Repair Regulations

President Trump aims to tackle the bureaucratic challenges that car owners face. During a signing event Monday, he expressed astonishment at the various difficulties the government imposes on vehicle repairs.

He stated, “If you own it, you should have the freedom to fix it!” further emphasizing his disbelief at reports of individuals being penalized for repairing their own cars. Following the signing, Trump remarked, “To a large extent, we govern by common sense.”

This newly signed memorandum is intended to enhance the ability of car owners to repair their vehicles. Currently, one significant barrier is the strict regulations surrounding emissions tampering. Trump clarified, “To further ensure vehicle affordability, it is my administration’s policy to ensure that consumers can repair their vehicles with affordable parts without being deemed to be circumventing emissions regulations.”

The initiative seeks to alleviate some of the regulatory burdens on consumers and aftermarket parts manufacturers who have been caught in a restrictive regulatory environment. Additionally, it reclaims federal authority from California’s regulations, which many have deemed excessive, thereby making the certification process for vehicle repairs more efficient.

The memo highlights that the California Air Resources Board is the sole entity overseeing the certification for aftermarket parts recognized under current regulations, a point that raises concerns about its monopolistic stance.

Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator focused on deregulation, heralded the memo as beneficial for consumers. “President Trump just signed a new presidential memo that protects Americans’ freedom to repair their own cars if they choose,” Zeldin mentioned, adding that it would challenge the dominance of cheap foreign aftermarket parts and the California board’s control over part certifications.

He also recalled a Saturday night conversation with Trump, saying the President insisted on expediting the memo’s drafting and approval process, echoing his trademark rapid style.
