Political Tension Surrounds Housing Bill
Democrats are in a bit of a scramble following the president’s ultimatum regarding the housing affordability bill, which saw significant bipartisan support and passed on Tuesday.
The 21st Century Housing Act is designed to boost access to loans and subsidies with the hope of increasing housing units and thereby lowering overall housing costs.
In a surprising twist, President Donald Trump canceled an event just hours before he was set to sign the bill. He indicated that he would delay the signing until Congress approved the SAVE Act.
“Today’s housing press conference and signing is hereby suspended until we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider a national emergency. Thank you for your attention to this issue!” Trump posted on social media.
Republicans are advocating for the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections, a move that Democrats strongly oppose, claiming it could disenfranchise legal voters.
This unexpected development caught many off guard. In a rather peculiar response, Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu of California made headlines with his remarks.
“A bipartisan housing bill just passed, and we had a big signing event planned. But suddenly, Trump decided not to show up,” he told reporters. “What’s going on? Did he wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Is he having an off day? Or is it something else entirely?” Lieu continued, casting doubts on Trump’s well-being.
He raised concerns about Trump’s health, stating that it seemed the president struggled to remain alert during various events. “There are indications he might be unwell. Swelling in his hand? We need clarity from the White House,” Lieu demanded.
As part of his claims, Lieu referenced allegations that a 79-year-old public figure was given experimental medications typically reserved for terminal cases.
“I mean, did Trump get this special drug? If so, why?” he questioned.
In response, Stephen Chan, the president’s chief of staff, dismissed Lieu’s allegations, calling him foolish for spreading what he deemed misinformation.
“Ted is clearly out of touch,” Chan shared on social media. “It’s just absurd to think that there’s some magic drug involved here. There isn’t.”
Lieu, undeterred, hit back, thanking Chan for inadvertently elevating the Democratic narrative while also reiterating his original question about the alleged medication.
The White House has firmly denied these claims, stating that the president did not receive any weight-loss treatment under special circumstances.
As for the housing bill itself, its future is now uncertain.
