Tragic Drowning of Wichita State University Student
A 21-year-old student from Wichita State University drowned in a well-known swimming area in Oregon, prompting concerns over the dangers of cold water immersion. The unfortunate incident happened at Tamorich Falls, often referred to as Blue Pool, while he was with friends on a Friday night.
Kenny Truong, originally from Wichita, Kansas, reportedly jumped into the cold waters and struggled to swim back to safety, as detailed by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. At around 8:47 p.m. on June 26, emergency dispatchers received a distress call about a man in trouble in the water near Route 126.
“Witnesses described him fighting to reach the shore before disappearing beneath the surface,” Deputy Sheriff Micah Smith said. “Despite efforts from bystanders and first responders, tragically, Kenny did not survive.”
The local authorities, including the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and others, responded to the scene that evening. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kenny’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult period,” Smith added.
Truong was pursuing a finance degree at the W. Frank Barton School of Business and actively participated as an at-large member of his university’s investment fund.
Blue Pool, renowned for its stunning turquoise hue and picturesque cliffs, draws many visitors each year. However, officials stress it can pose serious risks. Smith cautioned, “This site has claimed lives in the past and could again if folks aren’t aware of what they’re encountering.” The temperature of the water averages around 37 degrees, which can cause immediate shock.
Furthermore, those visiting should be mindful of the surrounding cliffs, which vary in height, and the challenging terrain that often complicates rescue attempts—especially given the limited cell service in the area.
A GoFundMe campaign started by Carter Nguyen honors Truong, remembering him as a cherished friend who inspired others to be their best selves. “Kenny was not just my best friend, he was like a brother to me,” Nguyen expressed. “He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel valued and capable of achieving more.” Nguyen reflected on the light Truong brought into every room, noting it was a genuine presence that couldn’t be replicated.
Officials urge anyone considering a dip in the waters at Tamorich Falls to understand the risks involved and remain vigilant about those around them. In case of any emergencies, it’s crucial to call 911 immediately.
