The impact of LeBron James departing from the Lakers on Bronny James

LeBron James’ Departure Raises Questions About Bronny’s Future

LeBron James has expressed his desire to play in the NBA alongside his son, Bronny James. The Lakers, who recently drafted Bronny, now face uncertainty about his future with the team following LeBron’s announcement that he will play elsewhere for the 2026-27 season.

With LeBron’s exit from Los Angeles now confirmed, attention has shifted to Bronny’s situation. He is currently in his third season in the NBA and remains under contract with the Lakers, even after his current salary ends. His contract is significantly secure, as it is fully guaranteed.

It’s crucial to note that Bronny is set to earn over $2.2 million next season, thanks to the four-year contract he signed after being picked 55th in the 2024 NBA Draft. His entire career has been viewed primarily through the lens of playing alongside his father, but the Lakers may not feel pressured to trade him just because LeBron is moving on.

In fact, keeping Bronny might just be the simpler path forward.

Since his entry into the league, Bronny has shown gradual improvement. After spending much of his rookie season with the South Bay Lakers, he participated in 42 games last season, gaining a small amount of playoff experience with the Rockets and Thunder. While his stats aren’t dazzling, his 3-point shooting has gotten better, and he appears to be evolving into a competent defensive player off the bench.

A cost-effective backcourt option remains valuable for the Lakers, especially as they build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Bronny’s relatively low salary, his youth at only 21 years old, and the fact that he has a team option for the 2027-28 season all make his retention appealing.

On the other hand, a more complex scenario could arise if Bronny were to join whichever team LeBron ends up playing for next.

The Golden State Warriors have been frequently mentioned in discussions about LeBron, especially after Draymond Green opted out of his contract to create roster flexibility. If the Warriors were to acquire Anthony Davis as well, the structure might necessitate integrating a lower salary player like Bronny, which could offer a nifty solution for their star-studded lineup.

However, that would require cooperation from the Lakers, and they might not feel obligated to accommodate LeBron’s wishes any longer.

For now, the most plausible scenario is that Bronny stays with the Lakers and continues to seek his place in the NBA.

LeBron’s chapter with the Lakers might be closing, but Bronny’s story is just beginning.
