Darin Peterson Looks Up to Kobe Bryant
Jazz rookie Darin Peterson recently opened up about his basketball idol in a meeting with the media in Utah. The former University of Kansas standout shared his thoughts on blending offensive and defensive skills, revealing a strong admiration for Kobe Bryant.
“I’m a Kobe guy. He played on both sides of the ball,” Peterson commented, expressing his desire to emulate Bryant’s defensive prowess. “That’s my idol. So I’m trying to be defensive,” he added, perhaps not shy about his aspirations.
Selected as the second overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Peterson enjoyed a notable season at Kansas, where he averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 24 games.
He transitioned to discussing defense with confidence, saying, “I would like to say that I can be a lockdown defender. Of course, I have not yet defended the best player in the world, but I am happy to take on this challenge.” He noted that having a 6-10 wingspan could be advantageous, though he acknowledged he might not be the quickest player. “If I put in the effort, I can make up for it to a certain extent,” he concluded cautiously.
While it’s important to recognize that Peterson hasn’t yet matched Bryant’s extensive stats—after all, the late basketball legend had a 20-year Hall of Fame career—there are similarities worth noting. For instance, Peterson averaged 3.5 defensive rebounds and 1.4 steals during his brief college season, while Bryant had a career average of 4.1 defensive rebounds and 1.4 steals.
In terms of physical attributes, both players share comparable measurements. Peterson stands at 6-5 and weighs 205 pounds, while Bryant was 6-6 and around 212 pounds during his playing days.
Then there’s the mentality that Bryant embodied, famously referred to as the “Mamba spirit.” According to Peterson, “I mean, I didn’t care who I played against. In his eyes, he was the best player on the court.” This type of mindset is something that Peterson seems eager to adopt.
Throughout his illustrious career, Bryant achieved significant milestones, including winning five championships, being named NBA Finals MVP twice, and earning the league MVP honor in 2008, along with being the leading scorer in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
