LeBron James to Enter 24th NBA Season, Leaving Lakers Behind
It was time for a change.
LeBron James is set to return for an extraordinary 24th NBA season, but he won’t be doing so with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the last eight seasons and won a championship in 2020.
This news might come as a surprise.
However, there have been underlying tensions for a while.
James is known for being expressive. He often identifies himself as a playful adult, but lately, it was evident that he wasn’t fully content.
The atmosphere became toxic in February 2025 when the Lakers made a historic trade, acquiring Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, without consulting James first.
It wasn’t just that Davis, a close friend of James for years, was traded. It was more about the organization shifting gears without his input.
James had always been central to the team’s decision-making, but now it felt like he was being sidelined as the organization reevaluated its direction.
Both James and Doncic are talented players. Though they hadn’t really formed a deep connection, Doncic expressed admiration for James, hoping to learn from him.
Yet, all season long, it seemed clear that James and the Lakers were drifting apart. There was this simmering tension beneath the surface.
Sometimes the signs were subtle.
During James’ 14-game absence at the start of the season due to sciatica, he appeared less enthusiastic while supporting his team from the sidelines.
While he often engaged in casual conversations with Davis, he didn’t have the same rapport with Doncic.
In more obvious moments, the tension showed itself clearly.
One striking instance occurred in January when James faced questions regarding his relationship with Lakers governor Jeannie Buss. An ESPN article suggested Buss had contemplated trading him in 2022 and was hesitant about a contract extension in 2024. She reportedly felt discomforted by James’ influence, especially following the Lakers’ drafting of her son, Bronny.
When asked about his relationship with Buss, James responded diplomatically, noting that opinions can vary.
Despite downplaying the significance of that moment, it was undoubtedly a pivotal point.
This drama was surprising, especially after James had helped end the Lakers’ six-year playoff drought and secure their first title in a decade.
As the season wore on, things became more complicated for James.
After a successful three-game win streak in early March, injuries sidelined him again, prompting discussions that perhaps the Lakers might perform better without him.
Upon his return, he was assigned a lesser role, expected to be the third option behind Doncic and Austin Reeves.
He accepted this role, having grown accustomed to adapting, but it was evident that he felt undervalued.
In March, he acknowledged the sacrifice he was making, but it was clear he was frustrated.
James was undeniably still a force on the court. At 41, he could easily be a primary option for many teams, yet with the Lakers, it felt like he was being pushed aside.
This was starkly highlighted when Doncic and Reeves missed time during the playoffs, forcing James back into a starring role, leading the Lakers to a surprising 3-0 series lead.
After the team’s elimination, James remained silent about his future.
While both Buss and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka expressed a desire for James to retire as a Laker, their comments felt somewhat perfunctory.
For instance, Pelinka remarked about James, “Of course every team, including ours, wants him,” but he showed a different level of enthusiasm when discussing Reeves’ situation.
It became increasingly clear that James needed to part ways.
His relationship with the Lakers had run its course; it wasn’t filled with animosity or bitterness. They were simply on diverging paths. The Lakers were looking ahead, while James wanted to relish the final moments of his remarkable career.
It’s peculiar to think that James is starting anew at this point in his journey, potentially forgoing considerable financial offers from the Lakers to seek happiness elsewhere.
He had become less of his jovial self with the Lakers. As he neared the end of his career, he felt he hadn’t been celebrated in the same manner as other legends, like Kobe Bryant, who received accolades throughout his time in Los Angeles.
It was a shift that had been anticipated.
This chapter will be remembered fondly. James revitalized the Lakers, while they helped him secure a fourth championship, proving his legacy went beyond just a favorable Eastern Conference.
It was indeed a beautiful partnership while it lasted.
In Los Angeles, James became the league’s leading scorer and showcased resilience against the challenges posed by age.
However, as circumstances deteriorated, James now seeks to ensure his final chapter is a sweet one.
