What comes next for the Lakers following LeBron James' exit?

LeBron James’ Next Chapter: Lakers Transitioning to Luka Doncic Era

LeBron James is set to kick off his 24th NBA season in 2026-27—an impressive record. However, it looks like his time with the Lakers is coming to a close after eight consecutive seasons, marking the longest he’s remained with any single team in his remarkable career.

There’s some uncertainty regarding where James might land next, with teams like the Warriors and Cavaliers interested. But, the Lakers received confirmation early Tuesday, just as free agency was set to begin. They are now focused on fully embracing the Luka Doncic era as they aim to assemble a championship-caliber squad around the star guard.

They’ve got the financial means to make significant moves. As free agency approaches, the Lakers have the potential to clear over $50 million in cap space, depending on how they manage the contracts of their other free agents, including players like Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart.

With only seven players on the roster—Doncic, Jared Vanderbilt, Deandre Ayton, Jake Laravia, Dalton Knecht, Bronny James, and Adu Tierro—the team has plenty of gaps to fill. The Lakers have already prioritized their offseason plans by reaching a four-year, $185 million agreement, solidifying the backcourt with Doncic and Austin Reeves.

Despite this, there are still clear needs that must be addressed.

Even though Deandre Ayton has opted into his $8.1 million player option for 2026-27, the Lakers are on the lookout for other big men, aligning with Doncic’s preferences for the team. They’re eyeing restricted free agents Jalen Duren from the Pistons and Walker Kessler from the Jazz—both could serve as notable improvements over Ayton.

Duren just wrapped up a season that earned him All-Star and All-NBA Third Team honors, while Kessler has emerged as one of the best rim protectors in the league since his debut in 2022. He possesses the athleticism and skill set that fits better with Doncic’s style, allowing him to contribute even when he isn’t directly involved in the offense.

Both players are currently navigating contract negotiations with their respective teams. Duren, who had a rocky start with the Pistons, is now looking at other options, including a potential meeting with the Lakers. Meanwhile, Kessler has started talks with other teams after the Jazz reportedly offered him a five-year contract worth $140 million to stay in Utah.

Targeting restricted free agents carries its own risks. Incumbent teams have until July 7th to match any offers, which could complicate the Lakers’ ability to secure other players. Given that some of their potential targets are signing elsewhere, the Lakers may need to act quickly.

Additionally, they’re considering Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, especially since it sounds unlikely he’ll remain in New York after the owner made it clear about budget restrictions. Robinson does carry some injury concerns, and he hasn’t been a full-time starter in over two years. Still, he could fit the profile of what the Lakers need.

Beyond the center position, the Lakers must also work on improving their depth, shooting, and perimeter defense, particularly in the wing positions.

Restricted free agent Peyton Watson would potentially fit in well as a forward alongside Doncic and Reeves, but the Nuggets seem hopeful about retaining him. Dean Wade, the Cavaliers’ versatile forward, is another option drawing interest from the Lakers. Then there’s Zhaire Williams, who was a key player in the Nets last season, now available after his team option was declined. He may develop into a reliable, athletic defender the Lakers are looking for next to Doncic and Reeves.

Even with some options slipping away, the Lakers still have multiple avenues to explore this offseason. With James moving on, they must seize this moment and make the most of the opportunity ahead.
