Lakers’ Pursuit of Jalen Duren Faces Setbacks
The Los Angeles Lakers’ hopes of acquiring Jalen Duren might be fading fast.
ESPN’s Mark J. Spears has reported that the Detroit Pistons are presenting Duren with a highly advantageous contract and are not inclined to entertain a sign-and-trade arrangement that would sync with any offer he might accept.
Duren is set to enter restricted free agency with Detroit.
On Monday, news broke that the Lakers were planning to meet with Duren on Tuesday to discuss a possible sign-and-trade deal.
Yet, it seems that Detroit is not willing to let Duren slip away that easily, which could necessitate a shift in the Lakers’ strategy.
Last season, Duren averaged 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, aiding the Pistons in breaking an 18-year playoff drought, all while earning his first NBA All-Star selection.
Currently, the Lakers have Deandre Ayton and Jackson Hayes as their only centers, which means they’ll need to explore other options if they’re looking to enhance that position.
Not too long ago, Luka Doncic expressed his desire for the Lakers to bring in more shooters and a premium center to improve their pick-and-roll strategy, a tactic that contributed to the Mavericks’ success in the 2024 NBA Finals.
With Ayton considered a top center before he opted for his $8.1 million option on Monday, the market for elite centers this offseason is somewhat limited.
In light of Duren’s potential meeting with the Lakers, the Sacramento Kings are also reportedly interested in him, considering a trade that includes 30-year-old Domantas Sabonis. Additionally, they are said to be looking at Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, which could represent a noticeable improvement over Ayton.
