Melania Trump Praises Supreme Court Ruling on Title IX
First Lady Melania Trump expressed her approval of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision allowing schools to have single-sex sports teams based on biological sex instead of transgender identity. She stated that this ruling also supports the “LGBTQIA+ community.”
In a post on social media, the President’s wife shared snippets from her memoir shortly after the ruling became public. “As many of you know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community, but we also need to ensure that female athletes are protected and respected,” Melania remarked.
She highlighted that the Supreme Court has “now legally confirmed this opinion: ‘Under Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, may schools maintain girls’ and women’s sports for biological females?…The answer is yes.'”
Melania further emphasized that the rights of both women and transgender individuals can coexist with respect. “America, we can support the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and protect opportunities for female athletes. Let’s respect everyone and keep women’s sports fair,” she said, noting that both ideals are essential.
President Donald Trump also shared a brief supportive message. He remarked on Truth Social: “Big win: The U.S. Supreme Court rules against men playing in women’s sports. Oh! That way, that ridiculous situation will go away!!!”
The justices reached a unanimous 9-0 decision, affirming that West Virginia’s Save Women’s Sports Act does not violate Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in public schools. They also ruled 6-3 that the law does not contravene the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
This ruling reversed a previous decision from the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which had determined that West Virginia’s law infringed upon the rights of transgender students. Neil Munro from Breitbart News noted that the judges did not mandate local governments to prohibit transgender athletes from competing, suggesting that there will likely be ongoing legal discussions regarding the matter.
