In the early hours of Wednesday, SWAT officers approached the rundown Stadium Inn and Spa in Los Angeles’ Figueroa Corridor, guns drawn, looking for Akhil Mukeshkumar, a figure linked to brothel operations.
When Mukeshkumar stepped out, clad in a T-shirt and shorts, an LAPD officer commanded over a bullhorn, “Come out with your hands up.”
Prosecutors have stated that Mukeshkumar served as the motel’s on-site manager, with around 90 percent of the rented rooms allegedly used for prostitution, where he had to keep half of the earnings.
This arrest is part of a broader federal initiative aimed at dismantling the sex trafficking network in Los Angeles, particularly focused on disrupting illegal activities in the Figueroa Corridor.
Alongside Mukeshkumar, six members of the notorious Hoover gang were among ten individuals charged in a federal indictment, facing serious accusations including child sex trafficking.
By early morning, six suspects—one of whom allegedly owned a brothel—had been taken into custody during up to twelve coordinated raids across the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.
LA’s chief prosecutor, Bill Ezeili, noted that this operation, dubbed “Operation Broken Blade,” marks a significant step, as it is the first gang case aimed chiefly at human trafficking in the historically notorious Figueroa Corridor.
Esseri commented on the severity of the situation, as the Hoover Ring is known to prey on vulnerable individuals like runaways and foster kids, often using violence and intimidation to force them into prostitution.
The indictment comprises 65 counts and reveals that from 2021 to the present, the Hoovers primarily managed sex trafficking activities in the Figueroa Corridor, treating victims as mere commodities.
Among the alleged abuses detailed, there were claims of extreme violence; for example, one victim reportedly had part of her cheek bitten off, while others faced brutal beatings and manipulation involving drugs.
Ezeiri mentioned the importance of collaboration between federal and local law enforcement in tackling such a widespread issue. “This case showcases the effectiveness of teamwork in enhancing community protection,” he stated.
The indictment identifies 51 victims associated with these crimes, illustrating the deep-seated nature of this illicit industry in Los Angeles.
