Celtics Trade Jaylen Brown to 76ers in Surprising Move

Boston has decided it’s time for a change.

In a surprising twist, the Celtics have traded former star Jaylen Brown to the 76ers, according to Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated. The deal reportedly centered around a mixed package that includes veteran player Paul George and four draft picks, which many critics view as underwhelming.

The push to trade Brown grew stronger, and the Celtics ultimately let go of the once-promising first-round pick, perhaps without expecting much in return. Mannix noted this shift in priorities: “They wanted to move Jaylen Brown, but ultimately they didn’t care what the return was because it wasn’t a dollar-for-dollar value,” he mentioned in a video shared on Wednesday night.

The idea of trading Brown had been circulating for weeks, especially as he was reportedly part of a package intended for the Bucks in an attempt to land Giannis Antetokounmpo, which ultimately fell through. Fans and analysts were left debating whether the Celtics would hang on to Brown after an offer was made to him, but Boston has now opted to part ways with the duo that contributed to their 2024 championship alongside Jayson Tatum.

This trade has definitely changed the dynamics, and Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, surprised many by letting go of a player who had recently finished sixth in MVP voting.

As per ESPN’s report, the Celtics received two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and the 36-year-old Paul George in return. Depending on how the 76ers perform in the coming years, the first-round picks might not hold much value. Still, it’s clear that George doesn’t measure up to Brown in terms of talent.

Last season, George averaged 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds, even with a 25-game suspension for a drug violation. Since the 2018-19 season, he’s only played over 60 games once. His salary is comparable to Brown’s, which doesn’t really help Boston’s chances of finding a suitable replacement.

There are theories that Boston took on George’s hefty contract to potentially offload it sooner rather than later, though doubts linger about the absence of a more enticing offer.

But as Mannix pointed out, the Celtics might be at a point where they’re not just looking for the best deal anymore.

“Paul George was an All-Star a few years back, but he’s declined sharply and is among the worst contracts in the NBA. A first-round draft pick in 2031 could eventually be beneficial, but that’s quite a ways off,” Mannix commented. “So, the Celtics traded away a 29-year-old All-NBA superstar for an injured Paul George and a couple of first-round picks.”

“They were destined to end the Jaylen Brown era somehow. They didn’t land Giannis and missed out on other stars like Evan Mobley. Now, they’ll have to face Jaylen Brown on the 76ers four times a year. It’s a shocking move for the Boston Celtics.”
