American Fans Fill National Mall for Soccer Match

Young adults filled the National Mall in Washington, D.C., gathering for an event that felt like a throwback to an earlier era.

The U.S. team faced Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday, attracting fans from across the nation to witness this significant match.

“It’s absolutely wild here!”

With this win, the American team repeated its previous achievements in the last three World Cups, advancing to the Round of 16 with a solid 2-0 score. Seeing many young Americans rallying behind the team signifies a notable change in support.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Fan Zone is a prime example of this shift. Organized by the Trump administration’s Freedom 250 Initiative, it took place right on the National Mall.

Thousands gathered, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a college football game. The crowd erupted when Team USA netted its first goal in the 45th minute, taking a 1-0 lead.

DC News Now’s reporter Tiger Mann captured the intensity of the moment: feeling the buzz in the air as celebrations sparked fierce excitement.

“You can’t even see me now; it’s so wild in here!” he shouted into his microphone.

Revved up by the crowd, he expressed his pride, saying, “Look at this energy and patriotism! It’s truly wonderful to see on the National Mall.”

Later, when Team USA scored again in the 82nd minute, the excitement heightened, bringing in even more spectators. The atmosphere just continued to build until long after the game wrapped up.

As the cheers mingled with flying beer cans and bouncing beach balls, fans lifted each other onto their shoulders, marking a lively, organized gathering full of spirit.

Historically, Team USA reached the World Cup in 2010, 2014, and 2022, consistently making it to the Round of 16. Their standout moment was in 2002 during the Japan-Korea World Cup when they placed eighth after reaching the quarterfinals. Interestingly, the team’s best result overall remains a third-place finish at the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

However, there were tough times too—failing to qualify from 1954 to 1986 and missing out again in 2018.

In this match, Folarin Balogun from Brooklyn and Malik Tillman, who has ties to both American and German teams, scored for the U.S. Balogun was pivotal, while Tillman’s background showcases the diverse lineage that contributes to American soccer.

Next up, Team USA is set to face Belgium on Monday at 8 PM ET in Seattle. The Belgian team, despite previous expectations, only managed a narrow win against Senegal on Wednesday.
