Farewell to Discs: Sony Will Stop Making Physical Games in 2028

PlayStation to Stop Producing Physical Disc Games by January 2028

On Wednesday, PlayStation revealed that it will cease production of physical disc games starting in January 2028. This announcement has sparked significant backlash from gamers.

The company made this announcement through a blog post, stating that, “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift from physical discs to digital, production of physical game discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” After this date, new games will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and at retail outlets. However, this transition will not impact games already released or set for release before January 2028.

PlayStation noted that this decision reflects a natural shift in consumer habits that “align more closely with how most of the community prefers to access and play games today.”

The company emphasized its commitment to innovation in how players can access games, ensuring they have options to purchase new titles either at retail stores or digitally.

Fans wasted no time in voicing their disapproval online, expressing concerns that this move would eliminate the resale, used, and borrowing market for games. Additionally, there’s a growing anxiety about relying entirely on internet connectivity and server functionality to access their games.

This announcement comes at a particularly tough time for PlayStation. Earlier this week, it angered customers by revealing that over 500 movies they had already purchased would soon be unavailable. According to reports, users will lose access to these titles starting September 1, 2026, due to a licensing agreement with Studio Canal.

Sony confirmed that, “Starting September 1, 2026, per our content license agreement, content previously purchased from Studio Canal will no longer be accessible and will be removed from your video library.” This means that all Studio Canal titles acquired by PlayStation account holders will be eliminated from their libraries after this date, including films like “A Bigger Splash” and “A Dangerous Man.”

Moreover, as mentioned in recent news, Rockstar Games is set to release the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, which will feature a “physical” version that actually contains no physical media at all, just a code for digital access.
