Mother of five fatally struck by a stray bullet while getting slushies with her children

A mother from Missouri was fatally shot in front of her children on Tuesday night during a confrontation between two groups at a gas station, according to her family and local authorities.

Shakira Martin, described as a “devoted mother of five,” was at a BP station in Ferguson with her kids, purchasing slushies to celebrate moving into a new home the following day.

“What should have been a joyful family occasion turned into an unimaginable tragedy,” noted Whitley Anderson, Martin’s cousin, in reference to a fundraising effort set up by family members.

The 35-year-old mother, full of love and hope, was in the midst of enjoying the moment with her children when chaos erupted. An unidentified friend who was with them recounted that several men arrived, shot at another group, and then fled the scene. Witnesses reported hearing at least 10 shots before Martin realized she had been struck.

Sadly, she was shot in the head and passed away right in front of her kids. Another innocent bystander was also hit in the incident and was in critical condition, according to reports.

In a heartbreaking reflection, a grieving relative questioned how a simple trip to the store could lead to such a tragic outcome.

Martin’s 8-year-old niece shared memories of her aunt, recalling her beauty and kindness, and lamenting that she never got to say goodbye. “I cried because I didn’t know she was going to die,” the girl said.

Shakira Martin leaves behind her five children, whose ages range from 3 to 15. “She was just a kind mother, a kind daughter, a wonderful sister,” Anderson said, grappling with the immense loss.
