Switzerland Advances to World Cup Round of 16 with 2-0 Victory Over Algeria
In Vancouver, British Columbia, Switzerland secured a 2-0 victory against Algeria on Thursday night, thanks to goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye. This win allows Switzerland to move forward to the Round of 16 in the World Cup.
The Swiss team is set to face the victor of the Colombia versus Ghana match on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri. The knockout stage matches are scheduled to take place next Tuesday in Vancouver.
Interestingly, it had been quite a long time—since 1938, to be precise—since Switzerland last celebrated a win in the final tournament, although they did manage to reach the quarter-finals in 1954 after a playoff.
Switzerland has qualified for the last 16 in each of its last three World Cups, yet they haven’t progressed beyond that stage since the tournament adopted a 32-team format.
Algeria made a return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014. They managed to reach the finals that year but were eliminated by the eventual champions, Germany.
The match began with Algeria controlling the first ten minutes. Then, a run by Johan Manzambi along the right flank led to Embolo’s goal. Embolo celebrated by sliding on his knee, marking his 26th international goal.
Just after the second half commenced, Ndoye took a shot that caught Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, off guard, further stretching Switzerland’s lead.
Later on, Switzerland nearly added a third goal through Fabian Rieder in the 81st minute, but the ball narrowly missed the Algerian goal.
On a side note, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was busy too, attending his second match of the day after earlier watching Spain play against Austria in Inglewood, California.
Algeria had managed to secure third place with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria in Kansas City last Saturday. This result allowed both teams to advance while Iran faced elimination. Notably, Algeria’s captain, Riyad Mahrez, scored two goals in that match.
Switzerland had previously defeated Canada 2-1 on Wednesday, with goals from Ruben Vargas and Manzambi, who had a standout tournament, scoring two goals and assisting in two others. Unfortunately, Canada’s hopes for reaching the knockout stage on home soil were dashed. In contrast, Switzerland received a ticket to Vancouver.
During a week off, the Swiss team returned to their training base in San Diego to regroup. It’s worth mentioning that Manzambi, only 20 years old, emerged as a breakout star, transitioning from a bench role to a starting position in the team’s final two matches.
Interestingly, Algeria’s head coach, Vladimir Petkovic, previously managed the Swiss team from 2014 to 2021. Under his leadership, Switzerland saw early exits in the 2018 World Cup group stage but also experienced success reaching the quarter-finals in the 2020 European Championship.
