Stolen Somali Flag Sparks Controversy in Buffalo
During an overnight incident, the Somali flag that had been displayed outside Buffalo City Hall for Somali Independence Day was reportedly stolen, according to the city’s left-leaning mayor.
“On the night of July 1st, vandals damaged the City of Buffalo’s flagpole in Niagara Square, cutting cables and removing the Somali flag,” Mayor Sean Ryan stated in a Facebook post.
The Buffalo Police Department is currently investigating the vandalism after the city allowed the nonprofit organization HEAL International to display the flag on this date.
“This flag was put up by HEAL International, which has been raising the Somali flag in Niagara Square for at least four years,” Ryan noted.
Over time, the mayor’s office has also flown various flags from different countries, including Ukraine, Greece, and Ireland, symbolizing the city’s commitment to diversity.
The extent of damage caused by the incident to city property is still unclear.
There are two flag poles across from City Hall, one holding the American flag and the other designated for international flags.
According to Ryan, Bantu refugees from Somalia have been settling in Buffalo’s West Side since 2003.
“Buffalo is a proud and diverse city, and we are dedicated to celebrating the myriad cultures that enrich our community,” he remarked.
Recently, Ryan expressed frustration over the cancellation of the Fourth of July fireworks celebration, which took place just days before the flag raising.
Plans for a grand Fourth of July event were said to have faltered due to safety concerns raised by a contractor regarding fireworks near City Hall.
Rep. Nick Langworthy criticized Ryan’s reasons for the cancellation, calling it politically motivated rather than logistical.
Some residents of Buffalo shared their disappointment in Ryan’s leadership, labeling it “embarrassing.” Comments on social media reflected frustration over the absence of fireworks during such a significant holiday.
In defense, Ryan mentioned the city’s choice against holding fireworks on a river barge due to a scheduled display in August.
Buffalo does plan to host the “Stars, Stripes and Signers” event as part of the ongoing America 250 celebration at locations like Buffalo Naval Park and Canalside.
