Democratic Socialists of America Encourage Ocasio-Cortez’s Presidential Run
Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City, expressed enthusiasm on MS NOW regarding the potential of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) running for president in 2028. He stated that the organization would be “thrilled” by such a decision.
Following a recent victory of a DSA-supported candidate over an incumbent in the Colorado primary, host Antonia Hilton inquired whether the DSA had started strategizing for the next presidential election. Gordillo remarked, “I think we’re trying to influence the next presidential primary,” though he noted it was still early to determine specifics.
He further mentioned, “Many in our group would be quite pleased if Alexandria were to run, but ultimately it’s up to her.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s office has been approached for comments on the matter.
In other political developments, Democratic Representative Diana DeGette, who has been in Congress since 1996, lost her seat to Melat Quiros, a 29-year-old, first-time DSA-backed candidate. This comes in the wake of several surprising victories for DSA-supported candidates, including Darializa Avila Chevalier, who triumphed over incumbent Adriano Espaira, and another candidate, Claire Valdez, who won a primary to replace retiring Representative Nydia Velasquez.
Even though Chevalier has made controversial remarks about the United States, Ocasio-Cortez has continued to back her and other progressive candidates. In a recent interview, she urged her congressional colleagues to better support DSA-affiliated candidates by recognizing their potential before meeting them.
While Ocasio-Cortez has not officially announced her presidential candidacy for 2028, she appeared somewhat reserved about the idea during a previous interview. “Can I be president?” she pondered, adding, “Can’t I be president? Maybe I can’t.”
