Philadelphia Parade Canceled Due to Excessive Heat
This week, as Americans celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary, a parade in Philadelphia that was set for Friday has been called off because of extreme heat conditions. This decision was announced by Welcome America on social media, a message that was subsequently shared by the city of Philadelphia.
“Due to extreme heat, the Independence Day Salute Parade is canceled,” the post specified.
The National Weather Service for Philadelphia noted that the predicted high for the day could reach a staggering 104 degrees. If this happens, it would mark the highest temperature recorded at the Philadelphia International Airport since 1966.
In response to these conditions, City Health Commissioner Dr. Palak Raval Nelson has extended the current “heat-related emergency” through 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The parade was expected to feature floats and marching bands, which is quite disappointing given the effort that goes into such events. Michael DelBene, the president and CEO of Welcome America, expressed deep regret about the cancellation, emphasizing the priority of safety.
“While this decision is heartbreaking for everyone at our organization, there is no way we can hold an event of this magnitude in these dangerous heat conditions,” he said. He mentioned the hard work that all parties, including Todd Marcozzi and Under the Sun Productions, had put into organizing what was anticipated to be a historic event, noting the disappointment of having to cancel at the last moment.
DelBene reiterated that, despite the desire for large-scale celebrations, the safety and security of everyone involved must come first.
