Rui Hachimura’s Uncertain Future with the Lakers
With LeBron James signaling his intent to depart from the Los Angeles Lakers and Austin Reeves securing a new contract, Rui Hachimura now stands as the largest potential returnee for the Lakers’ 2025-26 roster. However, his future remains unclear.
At 28 years old, Hachimura’s recent season was impressive enough for him to aim for a lucrative deal in free agency. He averaged 11.5 points per game, alongside a three-point shooting percentage of 44.3, which certainly raises eyebrows.
The Lakers are reportedly keen on re-signing him, but they aren’t the only ones interested. According to NBA insider Marc Stein in a recent Substack article, the Minnesota Timberwolves have made Hachimura a priority in their search for a forward and are showing significant interest in signing him.
Minnesota hasn’t been idle this offseason. They’ve traded for star guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets, giving up a protected first-round pick in 2033, multiple pick swaps, and several future second-round picks. Plus, they already feature Anthony Edwards, who’s emerging as a major star in the league.
Critics have voiced their concerns about the Lakers’ front office, arguing that they haven’t adequately surrounded Luka Doncic with the support he needs. It’s still early in the offseason for Los Angeles, and there’s the possibility for changes, but if their only moves end up being re-signing Reeves and trading for Walker Kessler, the criticisms might hold merit.
Re-signing Hachimura would certainly help their cause, even if it means making further roster changes afterward. However, if he does not remain in Los Angeles, many fans hope he finds a home in the Eastern Conference.
