Deion Sanders Declares Cancer-Free Following Surgery

Deion Sanders has shared that he is now cancer-free after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous bladder. This discovery came to light during a routine exam last spring, which revealed a mass later identified as a malignant tumor.

Reflecting on his experience, Sanders mentioned, “Last year, I was fighting.” He recalled, “I walked off the property with a bag of blood and urine, trying to get back. But this has expedited the process. I’m just grateful to be where I am now.”

Sanders underwent advanced robotic surgery that involved removing his entire cancerous bladder and reconstructing it using a portion of his intestines. His surgeon, Dr. Janet Kukreja, explained that utilizing the body’s own tissue minimizes the risk of rejection by the immune system.

“It helped me get back in the game, get on my feet, and return to a normal life,” Sanders said. He aims to encourage others that there are options for surgery, particularly for those facing similar challenges.

Before the operation, the tumor posed a “very high risk,” with a 50% chance of recurrence or progression post-treatment.

Sanders was absent for the previous season due to cancer treatment, but he is set to actively participate in Colorado’s fall camp. It’s hard to say how his absence influenced the team’s 3-9 record last season, especially given the standout performances of Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

Reflecting on the past year, Sanders noted, “I think the whole team has benefited.” He expressed optimism about the lessons learned and the new team dynamics this spring. “We have the best coaching staff I’ve ever had. Everyone’s coming together. I just came out of the weight room, and the energy is high. I can’t wait for camp. It’s going to be phenomenal.”
