Off-Duty Swedish Police Officer Killed During World Cup Party

A Swedish police officer on vacation, Christian Zedig, was tragically killed while trying to intervene in a fight during a World Cup viewing event. The 32-year-old father of two was attacked while watching the match between Norway and Ivory Coast on an outdoor screen in Copenhagen.

Reports indicate that Zedig was knocked to the ground after stepping in to separate groups involved in a brawl along the city’s historic waterfront. This conflict reportedly began when a group of soccer fans celebrated Norway’s goal, which led to fans of Ivory Coast—who were of various ethnic backgrounds—being doused with beer, escalating tensions further.

Copenhagen prosecutors revealed that Zedig sustained a severe impact to his neck, resulting in a cervical vertebrae fracture. While he was rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The suspect in this violence initially fled the scene, sparking a police manhunt. He later turned himself in and has claimed he is innocent while being held for further investigation.

The suspect, a 31-year-old man of Congolese descent, has not been named publicly yet. He has a prior conviction for attempted murder, having served a seven-year sentence.

The tragic news of Zedig’s death spread widely on social media after the incident, though confirmation of his passing was delayed due to the timing of medical assessments. Though his wife and workplace had announced his death, reports suggested there was some confusion regarding his official status as he remained in critical condition for a time.

Petra Lund, head of the Swedish National Police, expressed condolences in an official statement. She emphasized the somberness of the news and extended sympathies to Zedig’s family and friends, highlighting the need for privacy as they grieve.

A memorial service is planned in Zedig’s hometown in Sweden on Saturday.
