The Great American State Fair Sparks Mixed Reactions
Attendees at the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., expressed that they didn’t perceive partisan politics overshadowing the celebrations, contrary to critiques aimed at President Trump for allegedly using the event to advance his administration’s agenda.
The 16-day fair, which kicked off last week, honors all 56 U.S. states and territories in anticipation of the nation’s 250th anniversary. It features attractions like a massive Ferris wheel, overpasses, and rodeos. However, ahead of the fair, several well-known artists scheduled to perform withdrew from the concert series, citing concerns about the event’s partisan nature and its association with the Trump administration. Artists such as Morris Day, Young MC, The Commodores, Bret Michaels, and Martina McBride pulled out, and some states opted not to send delegations, citing similar reasons.
Despite those concerns, many participants reported a different experience. NBC News noted that over a dozen attendees from various political backgrounds commented that they didn’t feel any political undertones at the event, even though there were protests against Trump’s vision for Washington and artists withdrawing from the lineup.
One attendee, Pamela, remarked that the fair was “just about America” and claimed she saw no political activities at all. She elaborated, saying, “People are just people. They’re having fun, they’re being kind. They open doors; they hug each other. It’s really nice to see.”
Another fairgoer, Daniela, who lives nearby, had expected a more politically charged atmosphere. “I think we heard a lot in our community that it was going to be like a MAGA rally,” she said. “But honestly, I think it felt very bipartisan.” She noted that most visitors simply wanted to celebrate the nation.
Nicole, another visitor, described the fair’s atmosphere as “amazing.” She said, “For our generation, this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. I think it’s a great atmosphere.”
President Trump officially opened the fair with a speech emphasizing American values. He said, “Ten days from now, our nation will mark 250 glorious years of American freedom and celebrate one of the most monumental milestones in human history,” referring to the Declaration of Independence’s impact in 1776.
The State Fair, ongoing through July 10th, hosts daily activities themed around concepts such as ‘Land and Prosperity’ and ‘Faith, Values, and Inspiration.’ For instance, Monday is themed “Everyday Health and Happiness,” also known as “MAHA Monday.”
The fair stands as a celebration of America, contrasting the left’s backlash over Trump’s changes to certain monuments and parks in Washington, D.C., including the restoration of the Reflecting Pool.
