Russian and Ukrainian leaders engaged in separate discussions with US President Donald Trump regarding efforts to end the ongoing war, now in its fifth year. Early Sunday, Russian officials reported that one person was killed in a Ukrainian strike on Russian-occupied Crimea.
Sergei Aksyonov, the governor appointed by Russia, shared on Telegram that two additional individuals were injured, with one in critical condition. However, specifics about the attack were not provided.
Ukraine has intensified its assaults on vital infrastructure in Crimea in recent weeks, aiming to cut off the Russian-held peninsula amid this latest phase of the conflict.
The peninsula, you might recall, was forcibly occupied and unlawfully annexed by Moscow back in 2014.
According to Western analysts, Ukraine’s growing reliance on long-range missile strikes highlights its capability to significantly challenge Russian positions and adds pressure on the Kremlin, which has seen its advances stall in recent days.
This particular attack occurred after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin had conversations with Trump about how to potentially halt the hostilities.
In a post on X, Zelenskiy mentioned that he called Trump to congratulate him on the American independence milestone and that they discussed the current situation on the front lines.
He noted a realistic possibility for ending the war, emphasizing that American resolve would be pivotal. “We decided to keep the lines of communication open during the NATO summit in Ankara,” he added late Saturday.
The Kremlin reported that Putin and Trump had a “constructive” conversation regarding the Ukraine situation during a phone call on Saturday.
Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that Putin congratulated Trump and the American populace during their nearly hour-and-a-half discussion, which marked the fourth such conversation this year.
Ushakov also indicated that Trump is “willing to support efforts aimed at an early cessation of hostilities and finding peaceful resolutions to the crisis,” adding that Trump’s special envoys will continue mediation efforts leading up to a trip to Moscow.
Meanwhile, Putin expressed his hope for a diplomatic resolution, provided that Russia’s core positions are acknowledged.
At the same time, he accused Kiev and its European partners of trying to prolong and escalate the conflict, claiming they are starting from a misguided understanding of the overall situation and the front lines.
Ushakov reported that Putin shared insights with Trump regarding the battlefield, asserting that Russian forces are making advances and reclaiming towns. He specifically pointed to the capture of the Ukrainian stronghold Kostyantynivka, labeling it a crucial development toward liberating the entire Donetsk region. However, Kiev contests Russia’s claims about taking control of Kostyantynivka.
