Aspen Acres Fire in Colorado Continues to Rage
Firefighters are still battling the Aspen Acres Fire in southern Colorado, which has expanded to cover tens of thousands of acres.
This wildfire was first reported on Monday, June 29, near the Aspen Acres Campground, about 16 miles northwest of Rye, Colorado. The information comes from an interagency incident management system.
Due to dry weather conditions, the fire has quickly spread, now encompassing nearly 89,000 acres as of Monday morning.
InciWeb reported, “Record low fuel moisture levels and red flag conditions that persisted for days prior contributed to the fire’s explosive spread. Winds exceeding 40 mph and gusts estimated up to 160 mph have fueled the flames.”
Despite the challenges, firefighting crews are working diligently to contain the blaze.
According to the information system, “Firefighting operations are progressing after several days of rapid movement and rotation efforts.”
Currently, over 1,100 personnel are involved in containing the fire, which is only 14% under control. Evacuations and warnings have been issued across Custer, Pueblo, Fremont, and Huerfano counties.
The fire is believed to be human-caused, and investigations are ongoing, though more details haven’t been disclosed yet.
Meanwhile, other wildfires are impacting the western U.S., including the Babylon Fire in southeastern Utah, which has surpassed 90,000 acres and is at 0% containment, with an estimated containment date of August 1.
Tragically, on June 27, three firefighters were killed and two more injured while responding to the Knowles and Gores fires near the Colorado-Utah border. The deceased have been identified as Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Sydney Watson, 27.
In response, Colorado’s Governor Jared Polis has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen firefighters.
Governor Polis expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to Emily, Nick, and Sydney’s friends, family, loved ones, and fellow crew members as they mourn their loss.”
It’s a tough situation, and one can only hope for some relief soon. Certainly, thoughts are with those affected by these fires.
