Stabbing Incident in Milan
A 22-year-old man, born in Italy to immigrant parents, was involved in a stabbing incident over the weekend in Milan, allegedly telling police, “It was fun. I’ll do it again as soon as I get out.”
The individual, identified as Ramin Saidily, reportedly attacked 55-year-old Gerardo Pastore while Pastore was having breakfast at a café called La Giada and chatting with his elderly father. This incident occurred in the Veneto region of Conegliano, where Saidily was born to Gambian parents.
According to reports from Italian news outlets, Saidily inflicted around 20 stab wounds on Pastore’s head, neck, chest, and abdomen during the attack early Saturday morning. There was reportedly no prior altercation between the assailant and the victim, and witnesses confirmed that they were strangers to each other.
Pastore underwent several surgeries in the hours following the attack but is no longer in critical condition. Although the wounds weren’t deemed particularly deep, the medical team indicated that his prognosis was still uncertain by Sunday night.
It was reported that Saidily was restrained by three Egyptian nationals who were present at the café long enough for the police to arrive.
What’s particularly alarming is Saidily’s comment to law enforcement, where he stated he found the act enjoyable and would repeat it. Disturbing security footage of the event has also been circulated by Italian news media.
Milan prosecutor Elio Ramondini charged Saidily with attempted murder, emphasizing the premeditated nature of the attack. It was believed that he had planned to target potential victims, and he was armed with a 21-centimeter double-edged knife, wearing a disguise at the time.
Reports indicate that Saidily, who had resided in the UK for a decade, arrived in Milan just days before the incident. While no connections to extremist groups were immediately found, a note with unclear phrases was discovered in his wallet.
Saidily’s father, living in Conegliano Veneto, was interviewed by police and mentioned that his son had left home a week prior without any communication, being unsure of his whereabouts.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini expressed shock and outrage over the crime, commenting on social media that if Saidily would indeed act again, he should never be released from prison.
