Japan Airlines plane on fire after possible crash with Coast Guard aircraft

A Japan Airlines passenger plane carrying more than 300 passengers may have collided with a Japan Coast Guard helicopter on Tuesday, causing a fire while landing at Tokyo Airport, local media reported.

Just before 6 p.m. local time, the plane was seen on the runway at Haneda Airport with flames coming out of its windows.

All 379 people on board the plane were evacuated from the burning aircraft after the crash.

According to military officials, the Japan Coast Guard plane was on its way to Niigata Airport before the collision to deliver relief supplies in response to a major earthquake across Japan.

According to local broadcasters, five of the six coast guard members were missing in the accident.

Japan Airlines Flight JL516 departed from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido 90 minutes before its disastrous landing.
