A Houston science teacher allegedly gave a student a test answer and a perfect grade during a months-long sexual relationship, a criminal complaint says.
Stephen Griffin, 46, a teacher at the Spring Branch Independent School District, faces a felony charge for having an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old student, according to a complaint filed in Harris County District Court last month. He has been released on $5,000 bail since his Dec. 7 arrest, according to court records.
“There is absolutely no evidence of this and we deny the charges,” his attorney Justin Harris told Fox News Digital on Monday. “Mr. Griffin has been an exemplary teacher throughout his career, which has blindsided everyone. We have followed some trails that may explain where these allegations came from. There is.
“Usually when something like this happens, what the complaints are about and what actually happens are often night and day different. They're on the same planet, but different parts of the same day. “We're waiting to see the evidence of the case. At this point, it's just an allegation. The Spring ISD Police Department announced that Stephen Griffin, 46, is facing a felony charge for allegedly having a sexual relationship with his 18-year-old student.
Griffin's 18-year-old student told Spring Branch ISD police that she met the science teacher at a hotel and then planned to meet him at his apartment during the 2022 and 2023 school years.
According to the complaint, the teacher was working at Memorial High School at the time and was in the process of divorcing his wife.
Texas Penal Code 21.12 classifies an inappropriate relationship between an educator and a student as a second-degree felony, regardless of whether the victim is a legal minor. The penalty is up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The student's mother brought the relationship between the two to the attention of administrators around Nov. 30, according to the complaint. Her daughter ended up sharing incriminating text messages between her and Griffin with Spring Branch ISD police later that day.
About a year ago, on September 23, 2022, the anonymous female student emailed Mr. Griffin and asked him to eat lunch in her classroom during recess. After her meeting, her teacher emailed her to her personal cell phone number and said they had “similar backgrounds” and were always available if she needed help or someone to confide in. she said.

The two had been exchanging text messages for several months, according to the complaint. According to the complaint, the student met Griffin at the Staybridge Suites Hotel in November, where they had sex.
She told police they continued to meet there and even had oral sex in the classroom. On one occasion, she and Griffin allegedly had sex in the back seat of a car behind a restaurant in Houston.
At that point, the student recalled, her teacher began giving her test answers in advance, and she began receiving 100% marks on all assignments. Griffin is said to have given her a gray staff jacket and a cologne-scented candle.
According to the student, their relationship ended in mid-summer 2023. Griffin said he told her to stop contacting him because he was trying to reconcile with his wife.
A Spring Branch ISD digital forensics technician then took the student's cell phone and searched his Snapchat and Signal accounts for communications with Griffin.
The complaint includes an undated Snapchat message from Griffin that says, “We need to talk. I missed you. Can we talk? I'm feeling suicidal right now. Call me. Got it, baby. . Is this what's going to happen? Don'' “Don't do that, please call me. Can I talk to you directly? Do you want money? I'm trying to kill myself. Please call me.''

Griffin's employment status was not immediately available from Spring Branch ISD officials.
“(This) is a personnel matter related to a criminal investigation. The district is unable to confirm the identity of the person involved at this time,” Spring Branch ISD told ABC13 last month.
