Schumer praises Johnson after spending deal: ‘Decent, respectful guy’

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, R-New York, praised House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, after Congressional leadership reached a new, largest spending deal on Tuesday.

“He's a very decent, polite guy, not like those guys who want to be macho or bully or intimidate. He's not that kind of guy,” Schumer said. said at a press conference Tuesday. “But he's in a very, very difficult position.”

On Sunday, Prime Minister Johnson announced the agreement with the Senate and White House in a “Dear Colleague” letter.

“Sales represent $1.59 trillion. [fiscal 2024] — Statutory level of fiscal responsibility law. “This includes $886 billion in defense spending and $704 billion in non-defense spending,” Prime Minister Johnson said in his letter.

But Mr Johnson faces a backlash from his right-wing colleagues over the deal. The House Freedom Caucus said in a post on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the deal was a “complete failure.”

“I say no to the Johnson-Schumer budget deal,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote to X on Monday. “This $1.6 trillion budget deal will not secure our borders, stop invasions, or stop a weaponized government from targeting Biden's political opponents.” And innocent Americans . ”

Congress currently faces a January 19 deadline to pass legislation to avert a partial government shutdown. Some ministries, including the Department of Defense, are providing funding until early February.
