A nude Calvin Klein ad featuring singer FKA Twigs has been banned in the UK after it was deemed “overly sexual” and “likely to cause serious offense” by objectifying women.
The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that the images in the Calvin Klein ad “direct the viewer's attention to the model's body rather than the clothes in the ad”. report According to BBC News.
The image featured a half-naked FKA Twigs wearing a denim shirt painted on half of her body, exposing the side of her butt and half of one breast. The caption accompanying the photo reads, “Calvin or nothing,” and is part of the brand's latest campaign.
The ASA also said that by focusing on the singer's “physical characteristics”, the company “presented her as a typical sexual object”.
“We therefore conclude that this advertisement is irresponsible and may give rise to serious criminal offences,” the agency said.
Calvin Klein defended its ad, saying it was similar to other ads the brand has published in the UK over the years.
The company said FKA Twigs is “a woman full of confidence and strength,” adding that the “Cellophane” singer helped create the image and that she approved it before release.
Calvin Klein added that all “traditionally sensitive” body parts were fully covered and the singer was in a natural, neutral position.
They reportedly complained that the photo was “overly sexualized.” The complaint also included an image of another Calvin Klein ad starring Kendall Jenner.
However, when it came to Jenner's ad, the ASA ruled that the image did not focus on the model's body “in a way that depicted her as a sexual object” and that the level of nudity was not what people expected. A typical lingerie ad, he added.
