Sen. John Kennedy (R) declared victory Wednesday following news that Charnelle Marie Bjerkengren's nomination for federal attorney general will not be renewed.
Last January, President Kennedy embarrassed Mr. Bjerkengren when he asked basic questions about the Constitution during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Bjerkengren is a Spokane County Superior Court judge, and President Joe Biden had nominated her to serve on the federal district court.
During that infamous hearing, Bjerkengren was unable to explain the contents of Articles 2 and 5 of the U.S. Constitution. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, reflected on the hearing a few days later, saying: say that Mr. Bjerkengren had “failed'' a question on the basic civics subject that “high school students across the United States study every year.''
Bjerkengren's nomination expired at the end of 2023. That's because, even though he was removed from the committee, the full Senate never voted on it. Mr. Biden could have renominated Ms. Bjerkengren, but her name was not on the list of her renominations that Mr. Biden submitted to the Senate this week. That means Mr. Bjerkengren will not become federal attorney general.
President Kennedy celebrated the development.
“Mr. Biden has sent a candidate who does not understand the basics of the U.S. Constitution. It is only natural that Judge Bjerkengren should resign,” he said. “Unfortunately, Biden is just trying to put unqualified people in court for the rest of their lives. He doesn't need people who don't know the law running the court.”
Meanwhile, Bierkengren said he had asked Biden not to resubmit his name as a nominee.
“I asked the President not to renominate me because of the uncertainty of my confirmation and to advance the important work of the federal judiciary,” she said. Said In a statement. “We hope that the next candidate will be confirmed quickly.”
“I care deeply about justice, the Spokane County Superior Court, and the people of Spokane County and Washington state,” she added. “For the past year and a half, I have been working through the nomination process, which has been taxing both personally and professionally. I have put all my energy and effort into the good work that my colleagues and I do every day. ” based in Spokane County. ”
