Conoco gas station in Camden, NJ, may have sold gas tainted with floodwater, officials say

A gas station in New Jersey is under investigation for selling gasoline that may have been contaminated by flooding, causing dozens of vehicles to break down.

Camden County officials confirmed that at least 26 vehicle owners reported their vehicles stalling after purchasing gas at the Conoco Station on Admiral Wilson Boulevard. The station closed at approximately 9pm on Wednesday and will remain closed until further notice.

Camden County spokesman Dan Keeshen told FOX Business that preliminary testing found “unusual amounts” of water in samples taken from the gas station's fuel tank.

Keeshen said gas station owners may have ignored warnings from a mechanism designed to pump water from fuel tanks and sold contaminated gasoline to customers. The owner could not be reached for comment.

“We are awaiting test results taken from the underground tank and should receive those results later today. In the meantime, we have locked down our pumps and are providing assistance to patrons affected by the event. We are coordinating with the business owner regarding full compensation,” Keeshen said.

As of Friday, the company had responded to 26 refund requests, officials said.

The cause of the contamination is still under investigation, but Keeshen said officials are “99.9% sure it's water ingress from winter storm fins.”

A winter storm hit the East Coast this week, bringing snow, heavy rain and flooding to New Jersey and other states.

As of early Wednesday morning, about 140,000 customers were without power in New York state, followed by about 100,000 in Pennsylvania and more than 50,000 in North Carolina and New Jersey.

Several inches of rain were recorded in towns and cities across the Northeast. New Jersey declared a state of emergency before the storm passed through the region.

“We can expect 1 to 4 inches of heavy rain and strong winds tomorrow morning through Wednesday morning, with the potential for inland and coastal flooding,” Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday. “This storm will exacerbate the effects of severe weather experienced in December and last weekend, with another storm possible Friday night.”
