A Texas state security guard says he's “happy to be alive” after being caught on camera and reportedly shot five times during a violent shootout with three armed robbers who robbed the marijuana dispensary where he worked. Told.
Jonah Duran had only been working at his cousin's store, Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary, in San Antonio for a few months when the robbers broke in around 3 a.m. Saturday. According to CBS5.
Duran, who was sitting on a couch when the attackers attacked, pulled out a handgun and fired at the suspects, two of whom were armed themselves.
According to the video, he jumped from Duran's bullets and hit one of the men, causing the man to fall to the ground.
The other gunman fired several shots and then fled with the other robber.
But Duran's victory in the horrific shootout was not without cost, the agency said.
His mother Nancy said the father of three was shot five times: three in the neck, one in the hand and one in the foot. At least one of them came from a wounded gunman who pulled the trigger one last time when he saw Duran get off the couch.
Authorities rushed security personnel to the hospital, where doctors performed hours-long surgery to save his life.
“I'm just happy to be alive,” Duran said Monday in his first comments since the ordeal. “I’m happy to still be around my kids.”
According to CBS, Duran's father died when he was young and she couldn't imagine what it would be like without him around her young children, including her 8-month-old daughter.
“Right now it's very difficult for me,” Nancy said. “I'm so thankful they didn't kill him.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Duran. As of Sunday morning, more than $10,000 had been raised.
“He will make a full recovery,” store owner Ricardo Lopez told the station. “My prayers go out to his family right now.”
Nancy added that she wants the three robbers to be held accountable, but she is still praying for the well-being of the injured attackers.
According to CBS, the unidentified suspect was in serious condition and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
“I just hope to God people are learning a lesson from this,” Nancy said.
Police have not released any further information about the other two suspects, who remain at large.
Recreational marijuana remains illegal in Texas, but medical marijuana is permitted.
