Iowa high school principal, hailed as hero for protecting students during school shooting, dies of injuries

An Iowa high school principal who was critically injured in a school shooting while protecting students earlier this month has died, according to his family.

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger died Sunday, his family announced on a GoFundMe page. Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home and Crematory confirmed the death to The Associated Press.

“The news has not yet fully sunk in, but Dan Marburger made the ultimate sacrifice,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Ten days later he lost the battle and this tragedy claimed his life.”

The shooting occurred in the Perry High School cafeteria just after 7:30 a.m. on January 4, the first day students returned from winter break.

The shooting killed an 11-year-old junior high school student and injured six others. The gunman, identified as a 17-year-old student at the school, died in an apparent self-inflicted shooting.

The day after the shooting, the state Department of Public Safety said Marburger “clearly acted selflessly and put himself in harm's way to protect students.”

Marburger's wife, Elizabeth, posted on the family's GoFundMe that her husband died around 8 a.m. Sunday.

“He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will cherish forever,” she wrote.

Perry is a town of approximately 8,000 people. The high school is part of the 1,785-student Perry Community School District.
