MSNBC swipes at ‘white born-again’ Christians who voted for Trump in Iowa following victory

MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner argued Monday night that “Trumpism” has become a quasi-religion for some Americans, including white evangelical Christians.

Wagner said in a live report that Christian evangelicals believe that Trump is the “Second Coming,” a reference to Jesus Christ, and that he feels “fascinated” by the evangelical voting bloc. He added that The Trump coalition, the MAGA coalition, has truly completely devoured the evangelical coalition. ”

Some polls show that “55% of new whites or evangelicals support Trump,” Wagner said.

“This has increased exponentially since 2016,” she continued.

Wagner noted that even though evangelical leader Bob Vander Platz endorsed presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, Trump still won overwhelmingly in the Iowa caucus vote.

Wagner said Vander Plaats' support for DeSantis is “obviously not an issue.” Mr. DeSantis came in second place in Iowa, trailing Mr. Trump by about 30 percentage points. “Evangelical America supports Donald Trump.”

Wagner said Iowa shows the “roots of modern Trumpism” and argued that evangelicals' “connections to Trump and MAGAism are deeper than previously thought.”

She quoted New York Times columnist David French as saying, “Trumpism has, in some ways, become a religion for certain segments of the American electorate, especially evangelicals.”

“It's no longer a question of virtue,” the MSNBC anchor said. “It’s about the vices that Trump represents.”

MSNBC host Joy Reid also made controversial comments Monday night, claiming that “white Christian” Iowans want to “bow down” to people of color.

“For all the things we think about the chances of an election, what people are betting on, God gave you this country and this country is yours,” Reid told his co-hosts. It doesn't matter when you believe it belongs to you and everyone belongs to you.” “Non-white, conservative Christians are fraudulent Americans, not real Americans. Then you don't care about getting elected, you care about what God has given you. That will happen.”

Later in the show, she argued that this ideology cannot be separated from religious ties.

“It’s a religion,” she said. “And I think what we really have to face, and this is what the Democratic Party is going to face, is that this is now white evangelicalism. It's Christian nationalism. It's That’s the name, right?”

She went on to say that “white evangelical Christians with a certain mindset” “own this country, are immigrants, are brown people, and believe that Hindus like Vivek Ramaswamy and his wife are illegitimate.” “They consider themselves Americans. They're not as legitimately American as they are.”
