Shannon Sharpe only needed two words to express his thoughts on Bill Belichick replacing Mike McCarthy in Dallas after the Cowboys' recent playoff failure.
“No, no” Sharp said Monday on ESPN's “First Take.” “Hey, don't you understand that Coach Belichick wants authority? Jerry Jones is going to hold a press conference and talk about what's going on with the team, and Coach Belichick just sits there silently. Can you imagine leaving it to Jerry? Absolutely not.
“This is a game made in hell. There's no worse game than Jerry Jones and coach Bill Belichick.”
The Cowboys and Belichick's relationship emerged after Dallas' embarrassing 48-32 loss at home to the wild-card seventh-seeded Packers on Sunday.
Dallas enjoyed regular season success under McCarthy, but has struggled in the postseason.
This year was supposed to be different with a loaded offense and a great season from Dak Prescott, but it turned out to be the same Cowboys as ever.
Jones didn't address McCarthy's status after the loss, but it wouldn't be surprising if Dallas turned to new leadership to get through the hump.
Belichick currently has odds of +340 on FanDuel to coach the Cowboys in 2024, with the Falcons as the favorite to land in 2024 (+170) and a non-coaching NFL job (+230). It has the third highest odds.
The former Patriots coach has already met with the Falcons.
While the idea of Belichick returning the Cowboys to the Promised Land seems like a viable idea, Sharp doesn't think Jones would turn to another head coach with a similar personality.
Jones has hired bombastic coaches like Jimmie Johnson and Bill Parcells, but later turned to the more mellow Jason Garrett and, ultimately, McCarthy.
“There's a reason he got rid of Jimmy. He got rid of Bill Parcells. You see? Coach Belichick studied under Parcells. Jimmy, Coach Parcells and Coach Belichick are similar. What did he do after getting rid of Parcells? He hired Chan Garys, Dave Campos, Jason Garretts, Mike McCarthys — that's not the type of coach he wants. I want to be able to do anything, and I want to be that face.
“Coach Belichick and Jerry Jones, this is going to be a hell of a game.”
