Drug smuggling is a lucrative but dangerous business. Smugglers must evade border guards, customs officers, police officers, and rival gangs. That's why some smugglers are turning to drones as a new way to transport drugs.

Drones are cheap and easy to obtain, but they are difficult to detect. They can jump fences, walls, and checkpoints and drop drugs at precise locations. They can also avoid human contact, making them less likely to be arrested or betrayed.

Drones are used for drug smuggling in different parts of the world, including:

Why are drones being used for drug trafficking?
There are many reasons why drug traffickers use drones. The top seven contributors are:
- cheaper
- easy to obtain
- Reliability – even if a drone is intercepted, authorities will not be notified
- Less interference from law enforcement officers than delivering by land or air (e.g. by hand or on foot)
- Easier than bringing drugs across borders, which are often heavily monitored
- Perfect for exploring enemies and business opportunities
- Risk is reduced because drug smugglers do not need to be physically present at the delivery location.

How drones are being used to transport contraband to prisons
Drones are not only being used to transport illegal drugs; was used to smuggle contraband Items such as cell phones are also brought into the prison. The number of drone-related illegal activities is rapidly increasing. 75% of illegal goods intercepted in Canadian prisons were delivered by drone. In the UK, the government began enforcing no-fly zones around all prisons in October 2023 after a surge in contraband by drones.

It's not just nefarious entities that are innovating with drones. legitimate business Drugstores, pharmacies and others are looking to deliver prescriptions by drone in the US and possibly the UK as well. El Pollo Loco seemed to be ahead of the pack.
