On ABC's “GMA3″ on Friday, Biden 2024 campaign co-chairman Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) responded to polls showing President Joe Biden's low approval ratings, saying, When we conduct opinion polls among young people, we find that support among young people is low.” If you're not told what's been done, that's a problem. ” And, “We are starting to make breakthroughs simply because we are now being given complete reports instead of incomplete reports before.”
Co-host Eva Pilgrim asked, “You said President Biden hasn't broken through the MAGA wall. What do you think?” What does that mean?
Mr. Clyburn replied: “The thing is, a lot of what we're doing isn't being reported. For some reason, we just couldn't seem to break through. That was then. This is now. And one of the things that came out… It has to do with the news: An additional $5 billion in student loan debt relief is now being reported. That wasn't reported before. And what he did that wasn't reported. There were 132 billion. Somehow we just couldn't break through that wall. Why? I don't know. It looks like we're still doing it. I published three different reports last week on how much relief students got. So, as I travel around the country, young people say to me, Joe Biden is not keeping his promise to alleviate student debt. He kept his promise. It wasn't reported. $137 billion, that's a lot of money for about 3.8 million people.”
Co-host DeMarco Morgan then asked, “So what are some of the president's other accomplishments that you think have been overlooked?” And what do you say to people who say he hasn't contributed enough, he hasn't done enough for the country? ”
Clyburn said, “The biggest thing that's underreported is the PACT Act, and it's not just relief for people who served in Afghanistan and Iraq who got cancer and other illnesses as a result of their burns.'' I think what you did there.” . But Joe Biden went back to Vietnam and highlighted the people who served there and weren't treated fairly. Look at the biggest infrastructure bill since Dwight Eisenhower's Interstate. I've heard all the announcements that have been made at the local level, but I don't think the national coverage of it is up to the standard it should be. ”
Pilgrim then asked: “Let’s look at some numbers. According to recent information, ABC News/Ipsos poll, President Biden's approval rating hit a record low of 33%. Are you worried that his numbers are going in the wrong direction?”
Mr. Clyburn replied: I think that's an outlier. I recently saw a poll showing that not only is he supported, but the numbers show he is leading Trump. I've seen two polls that say that. But I've seen other polls come out with a different opinion. These snapshots are taken at specific times. And if you're polling young people and they're not being told what's been done, that's a problem. So we feel very good about where the campaign will take place. I think we're starting to make a breakthrough simply because we're now getting complete reporting instead of incomplete reporting before. ”
