As the Mexican government continues to fail to address the escalation of cartel violence and gang control over the north of the country, the Gulf Cartel has once again exercised its power of total impunity, moving the bodies of two of its victims to a mortuary facility. Abandoned. Grave.
The incident occurred this week in the border city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas state. The Gulf Cartel had complete control over the city and was able to silence the local press and prevent them from reporting on their crimes. Earlier this week, Santa Cruz cemetery workers returned from their lunch break to find two bodies on top of two graves they had been digging.
The cemetery is located in the rural area of Las Lucias, along the Matamoros-Reynosa highway. This area was once on the outskirts of the city, but has since become part of the growing municipality.
The two men were found wrapped in black plastic bags with signs of torture and appear to be between 30 and 35 years old. Local news outlets did not report on the crime.
The men's identities have not been released, but authorities recorded their tattoos for future identification. One of the men had a statue of St. Jude on his calf, and the other had several tattoos, including a cross, the name Priscilla, and various Middle Eastern scripts.
The double murder is believed to be related to infighting within the Gulf Cartel. As Breitbart Texas reported, Matamoros' Gulf Cartel faction is fighting a rival faction in Reynosa for control of the lucrative trafficking route, despite government officials' false claims that all is well. The turf war has led to widespread violence in the region, but government officials have largely avoided confrontations with the cartel's armed groups.
Violence in Matamoros is expected to continue in the coming days after authorities in the neighboring state of Nuevo León arrested Juan Alberto “La Quena” García Vilano, leader of the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel, days after the murder spree. is expected to intensify. The crime boss was out at a shopping center when authorities arrested him, Breitbart Texas reported. His arrest is expected to create a power vacuum that could lead to an escalation in violence in the coming days.
