About 100 migrants are temporarily being held at Boston's Logan Airport as sanctuary state Massachusetts struggles to find accommodations as its shelter system strains. WBZ-TV It was reported on Tuesday.
Airport video showed scores of migrants, including men, women and children, crowding into a corner of Logan Airport's international terminal, Terminal E. Footage showed migrants sleeping on blankets on the floor next to their belongings.
Ketula Douz, who is in contact with some of the migrants, told WBZ that she is providing hygiene products to asylum seekers.
“We have a lot of well-care supplies because you won't have access to a shower while you're at the airport, so things like shower wipes and small towels to dry yourself off while you wait,” explained Does.
Democratic Gov. Maura Healey said Massachusetts State Police are being paid overtime to patrol airports.
“The airport is a great partner and I really want to thank the people at the airport who are doing a great job, including members of the State Police who work regular shifts while managing the inflow and outflow of people from the airport.” Healy said at a press conference Monday.
The governor asked the White House for assistance with the ongoing immigration crisis. She estimates that Massachusetts will spend $915 million next year providing immigration services, although she is requesting an additional $250 million in federal funding.
“We need action from D.C. We need action from Congress. We need action from Congress. There is a way forward in terms of what we need to do.'Countries that have had to bear the burden of geopolitical and non-state-created problems,' Mr Healy continued.
Healy State declared a state of emergency in August due to the increase in new immigrants. In November, the governor reported that the state's homeless shelters had provided lodging to 7,500 families and were at capacity. People seeking shelter are on a waiting list. She has repeatedly called on the Biden administration to help respond to the crisis.
San Diego International Airport also began temporarily allowing migrants into the country after the city's shelter system was overwhelmed in November.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport was converted into a makeshift migrant shelter in September. Asylum seekers were provided with cots hidden from the public behind large black curtains.
