Most in new poll say they pay too much in taxes

Most Americans feel they pay too much in taxes, and many think they’re getting little in return, a new poll finds.

About two-thirds of taxpayers said they believe federal income taxes, state sales taxes, and local property taxes are too high. according to They responded to a poll conducted by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Opinion polls show that about one-third of taxpayers say they get little value from paying taxes, and less than 25% say they get good value from paying taxes. It turned out to be.

Sixty-five percent of Republicans say the federal income tax is unfair, while about half of Democrats agree. Regarding local property taxes, 66% of Republicans and 51% of Democrats said the same.

Furthermore, 66% of taxpayers are not confident in how the federal government uses their tax dollars, and 58% say the same goes for state governments.

Overall, most people said they did not want to pay higher taxes, even if it meant receiving more government services. Half of taxpayers say they want their federal income tax to be reduced to reduce government services, 43% say they want their state sales tax to be reduced by cutting services, and 48% say the same for local property taxes. Democrats are more likely to say they would pay higher taxes if it meant more government services, with 33% saying they would pay more federal income taxes for more services. By contrast, only 4% of Republicans said the same.

The poll was conducted among 1,024 adults from Dec. 14 to Dec. 28 and had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
