Vaccine Expert’s Alleged Misconduct Leads to Lawsuit

A well-known vaccine expert has been accused of having romantic intentions towards a scientist from Northwell Health, leading to his termination after she repeatedly turned him down. This allegation surfaced in a recent lawsuit.

Peter Hotez, a molecular biologist and Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, gained notoriety during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was notably vocal on social media, even engaging in a debate with Joe Rogan over vaccine discussions involving Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In May 2024, things took a turn for Hotez, 68, a married man, during his appearance as a speaker at a Northwell Health symposium. Following the event, he allegedly expressed feelings for Annette Lee, a former graduate school colleague, as detailed in court documents.

Lee, aged 64 and herself a prominent molecular scientist and dean at Northwell Health’s Elmezzi School of Molecular Medicine, accused Hotez of professing his love for her multiple times despite their somewhat distant relationship. After the symposium, she recounted that the two shared drinks where Hotez confessed he had harbored feelings for her since their school days.

Throughout 2024, Lee claimed that Hotez reached out to her several times, discussing his on-again, off-again romantic life in a way that made her uncomfortable. “He had jokes about how much Cialis he bought,” she noted, adding that his celebrity status made her wary of their interactions, especially when he advised her to avoid being alone in cars with men.

In their correspondence, Hotez allegedly told Lee he would give up his relationships for her, which she firmly rejected, stating she wanted to remain friends without romantic involvement.

After experiencing a stressful day in August 2024, Lee texted Hotez, making a joke that perhaps he should be kept away from firearms. She emphasized that it was all in jest, asserting that Hotez knew her well enough to recognize it as such.

Instead of addressing the comment privately, Hotez reported it to Lee’s supervisor. Subsequently, he was dismissed from Northwell, where he had worked for over two decades. Lee’s lawsuit argues that this termination was retaliation for her turning down Hotez’s advances, and she is seeking unspecified damages.

A spokesperson for Hotez stated that he is currently reviewing the lawsuit, firmly denying the factual claims made by Lee. “Dr. Hotez would not be commenting further due to the ongoing litigation,” Claire Bassett, president of Baylor University, indicated.

Northwell confirmed awareness of the lawsuit, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace. “We deny any allegations that her separation was related to reports of ‘romantic advances’ by anyone,” spokeswoman Barbara Osborne stated.
