Detroit Lions legend Lomas Brown sees the Motor City struggling after his team lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
“We’re trying to calm down, but we’re still a little burned out,” Brown said on Outkick. “Please don’t attack me with Dan Dakich.” “This is the topic of every talk radio show around here, every TV broadcast. It’s all about the Lions, it’s about some decisions that were made during that game. Who’s to blame? Should it? There’s a lot going on around here. ”
Of course, the pain of missing out on the Super Bowl is obvious to anyone in a city that’s not even close, but the Lions were on the road against the San Francisco 49ers and trailed 24-7 at halftime. He held the lead. But then there was an epic collapse in the second half, and all the talk is about the decisions head coach Dan Campbell made that helped lead to that collapse.

Campbell’s decision to go for it on multiple fourth downs proved futile and ultimately led to late 49ers points. The first score came after the 49ers led a field goal drive to start the first half, with Detroit in position to kick its own 4-2 in the San Francisco area.
But that wasn’t the case at all for Campbell during the regular season, and he wasn’t going to continue to be the guy who trusted his players and kept the team moving forward. However, a throw from Jared Goff to Josh Reynolds hit the ground and the ball was turned over on downs.
At this point, with a 24-10 lead, they made a field goal, which would have given them a three-point lead again. While many have praised Campbell’s gambling nature at No. 4 shortstop, Brown believes it wasn’t the right decision, even if it was early in the first half.
From Outkick: After 49ers disaster, Detroit Lions score big coaching victory.
“What I always say is you have to judge the flow of the game,” Brown said. “You have to do that. You can’t always use an analytical method. You have to have intuition. You have to see how the game is going, how the players are playing. Some of the reactions you get from the players on the sideline, some of the reactions you get from the coaches on the sideline, some of the reactions you get from the coaches in the booth, when you’re making a particular decision. You have to take everything into account. When I tell you to do this, you do it.
“For me, I know Dan has always been that way. But for me, I think I’ve got to be able to see the situation a little bit more and be able to judge the flow of the game and the high tide and the low tide.”From there. Please make a decision. ”
Another call with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the game ended the Lions’ lead after the 49ers made it 27-24. And on fourth-and-short, Campbell forced kicker Michael Badgley to make a field goal to retake the lead rather than tie the game.
Goff scrambled out to his right to buy time to find an open receiver, but ultimately couldn’t.

“I’m kicking it,” Brown told Dakich about that fourth-down call. “That’s why I got this guy on the team who is a kicker. That’s why I put him there for situations like this. You know, he’s a 50-yarder at Ford Field. I kicked him. I know it’s a different situation — we’re in the dome.” Weather is not a factor, but neither was the weather in San Francisco.
“For me, I’m just trying to stop that momentum a little bit. I think I would have gotten the points.”
Campbell admitted that he tried to triple with David Montgomery to get the Lions within a field goal late in the game, even though there was a lot of criticism for calling him to do it. It should have been a pass play that didn’t cross the goal line.
Despite this, the Lions were unable to convert on the onside kick, and the 49ers used a come-from-behind victory to seal their return to the Super Bowl, but Lions fans felt the gut punch of being one step closer. continuing.
The Lions have steadily gotten better every year since Campbell took over in 2021, which bodes well for the Lions’ trajectory in 2024 and beyond. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson also remains on the coaching staff despite being a top candidate for the head coaching position.
